What is pétanque
The French cousin of bocce. Players toss steel balls at a small wooden target ball on packed dirt courts, and the strategy runs deeper than it looks from the sidewalk. The tournament was founded by Philippe Boets of Pétanque America, and the waterfront courts turn downtown Fernandina into a little slice of Provence for a weekend.
Before you go
Spectating is free and the atmosphere is relaxed. Centre Street restaurants sit a block away, which makes this the lowest-effort spectator sport on the calendar.
