What Is the 324 Area Code?
Share
The 324 area code is a real area code serving the same Northeast Florida territory as 904. It became active on February 26, 2024 as an overlay, which means new phone lines in the region can be assigned 324 while every existing 904 number stayed exactly as it was. Both codes cover identical geography.
An overlay is the polite version of a split. Nobody loses a number, nobody reprints anything, and the only cost is that you now dial ten digits to call the guy across the street. Given what happened in 1997, we got off easy.
Is 324 a Real Area Code?
Yes. The overlay was approved in May 2022, the digits were announced in June 2022, and 324 launched February 26, 2024. It serves the same communities as 904, including Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Fernandina Beach, and Orange Park.
If a 324 number calls you, the number itself is not the red flag.
Why Jacksonville Needed a Second Area Code
We ran out of numbers. In January 2022, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator forecast that the 904 would exhaust during the third quarter of 2024. Regulators had seen the shortage coming since the overlay was first proposed in February 2022.
Cellphones did most of the eating. Every line, tablet, alarm system, and work phone pulls from the same pool. There are not two million people here with three phones each, but the numbers don't know that.
What Changed for You
Not much, and all of it in early 2024.
- Ten-digit dialing became mandatory. That took effect January 29, 2024, ahead of the 324 launch.
- Your number stayed your number. The overlay expands the supply of phone numbers. It does not modify existing ones.
- Equipment needed updating. Alarm panels, autodialers, and anything with stored numbers had to recognize 324 as valid.
If you still have a fax machine on a line somewhere, this was your event.
Is a Call From a 324 Number a Scam?
Not automatically, and this is the question sending most people to this page. 324 is legitimate and locally assigned.
That said, an unfamiliar local-looking number deserves the same treatment any unfamiliar number gets. Spoofing lets a caller display digits they don't own, so a local area code has never been proof of a local caller. The useful habit hasn't changed: don't act on anything urgent that arrives by surprise phone call, and hang up and dial the organization back on a number you looked up yourself.
The 324 didn't make that worse. It just gave the anxiety a new shape.
Does a 324 Number Cost More to Call?
No. An overlay changes the supply of numbers, not the rating or routing. A 324 line sits in the same Northeast Florida rate centers its 904 neighbors do. Anyone quoting you a surcharge for the new area code is telling you something about themselves.
Who Actually Ends Up With a 324
Customers requesting new service, an additional line, or in some cases moving service may be assigned a 324 number. So it skews new arrivals, new businesses, and anyone who added a line after February 2024.
Which sets up a small social problem every September 4. A meaningful number of people at the 904 Day party are technically in the 324, and the toolkit doesn't address it. We're choosing not to litigate this.
