What Counties Are in the 904 Area Code?

The 904 area code covers all or most of seven Northeast Florida counties: Nassau, Duval, Baker, Bradford, Clay, St. Johns, and Union. That's the count in the Florida Public Service Commission's own order. The 324 overlay serves the identical territory.

Search this question and you'll get five counties, seven counties, and eight counties on the same results page. One national phone directory currently states that the 904 has no overlay, which stopped being true in February 2024. This is the rare local question where the government paperwork is easier to read than the guides.

Why It's All or Most and Not a Clean Seven

Area code borders don't follow county lines. They follow LATA and rate center boundaries, which were drawn for telephone routing and have no interest in where the county puts its sign.

The 1997 split that created 850 followed LATA boundaries rather than county lines. That's why the PSC writes all or most of instead of just listing counties. Parts of Clay, Bradford, and Union sit outside the 904 even though the courthouse doesn't.

So the honest answer is seven counties, with fuzz at three of the edges. Anyone giving you a clean number is rounding.

Is St. Augustine in the 904?

Yes. St. Johns County is 904. The area code reaches from Fernandina Beach in the north down to St. Augustine in the south.

This surprises people from both ends of it. Amelia Island and the Castillo are in the same three digits, about ninety minutes apart, with the entire city of Jacksonville in between.

Is Orange Park in the 904?

Yes. Orange Park is named in the state's own list of 904 communities. Fleming Island, Middleburg, and Green Cove Springs are Clay County and also 904.

Why the Sources Disagree

Three reasons, and none of them are interesting enough to be a conspiracy.

• The footprint changed three times. Parts of the 904 were split off over the years to create 352, 850, and 386. Pages written from old data describe an area code that stopped existing in 2001.
• Partial counties get counted differently. Include the fringe counties and you get seven. Drop them and you get five.
• The overlay broke a lot of stale pages. 324 arrived in 2024 and plenty of directories never updated.

The PSC order lists Nassau, Duval, Baker, Bradford, Clay, St. Johns, and Union. When something contradicts that, the order wins.

What This Means on September 4

904 Day is a seven-county holiday. Starke gets it. Lake Butler gets it. Ponte Vedra gets it. The 904 stretches from the Georgia line to the oldest city in the country, and every one of those places has an equally strong claim to the number.
