Which high school is the largest in Duval County?

For years the answer was automatic: Sandalwood, the Southside giant that opened in 1971 and has long been described as the district's biggest school. Federal data from 2023-24 put Sandalwood around 2,726 students.

But the latest Niche and federal enrollment figures show Atlantic Coast High School slightly ahead, in the 2,800 to 2,900 range. So the honest answer for 2026: Atlantic Coast holds the number by the most recent counts, Sandalwood holds the reputation, and the gap is small enough that a single strong freshman class flips it. Both schools sit on the Southside within about six miles of each other, which means the two most crowded student parking lots in the county share the same stretch of town.

What about Mandarin and Fletcher?

Mandarin High typically runs in the mid-2,000s and rounds out the county's big three. The largest traditional campus is Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Broward County, with around 4,600 students by recent counts. At its 2007-08 peak, Cypress Bay passed 5,500 students and was reported as the most populous high school in the entire country, which forced the district to cap enrollment and redirect new students elsewhere.

One technicality worth knowing for trivia night: if you count virtual schools, statewide online programs like the Digital Academy of Florida report enrollments over 6,000. We'd argue a school where nobody has ever waited for a bathroom pass belongs in a separate category.

How Duval's biggest compare to Florida's biggest

Duval runs a different model than South Florida. Instead of a few mega-campuses, the district spreads roughly 46 high schools across the county, with its most famous schools, like Stanton and Paxon, deliberately kept small.
