Free Things to Do in Jacksonville, FL This Weekend

Free Things to Do in Jacksonville, FL This Weekend

Jacksonville is a big city with a lot going on and a surprising number of ways to fill a weekend without spending much. The beach is free. The parks are free. Several of the best events in the city are free.

Here's what's actually worth your time this weekend.

Go to the Beach

The most obvious but still worth saying. The beaches at Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach are all free to access. No parking fees at the main public beach access points (though paid lots exist). Just show up, find a spot, and enjoy 22 miles of Atlantic coastline that a significant portion of the country would love to have access to. For help picking which beach to hit, see our honest local beach ranking.

Early mornings before 9am are genuinely magical on these beaches. The light is soft, the crowds haven't arrived, and it's one of the better free experiences anywhere in Florida.

Explore Riverside and Avondale

This is Jacksonville's most walkable, most charming neighborhood cluster and it costs nothing to walk around it. The architecture is beautiful, the streets are tree-lined, and there are parks and green spaces woven throughout.

Memorial Park on the riverfront is a beautiful spot to sit and watch the St. Johns River. The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens has free garden access even without a museum ticket.

Treaty Oak Park

Downtown, Treaty Oak Park is home to one of the most impressive trees you'll ever see. The Middleton Burbank Oak is estimated to be over 250 years old, stands 70 feet tall, and has a canopy spanning 188 feet. It's one of Jacksonville's genuine living landmarks and it's completely free to visit.

Walk the Riverwalk

Jacksonville's Riverwalk stretches along both sides of the St. Johns River through downtown. It's a scenic walk with views of the skyline, the bridges, and the water. On a nice evening it's legitimately one of the more enjoyable free walks in the city — and pairs perfectly with checking out the best sunset spots in Jacksonville.

Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park Trails

While the beach section of Hanna Park has a small entry fee, the trail system and some areas of the park are accessible for free. The mountain biking trails here are considered among the best in Florida and the forested paths are a genuinely beautiful slice of wild Florida right inside the city.

Free Museum Days

Several Jacksonville museums offer free admission days throughout the year. Check out our full guide to the best museums in Jacksonville for hours and current free admission schedules:

  • The Museum of Science and History (MOSH) has free community admission days
  • The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens has free admission on Tuesdays from 4-9pm
  • The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens has periodic free days

Farmers Markets

The Riverside Arts Market happens under the Fuller Warren Bridge on Saturday mornings and it's completely free to attend. Local artists, food vendors, live music, and a beautiful riverfront setting. For the full Duval County farmers market map, see our guide to all the Duval farmers markets.

Free Events and Festivals

Jacksonville has a calendar full of free events throughout the year. Check the spring guide to Jacksonville for March-May events, and the summer activities in Jacksonville guide for the hot months. The Jazz Festival in May, Art Walk in Riverside on the first Wednesday of each month, Movies in the Park events, and various free concerts throughout the year.

Fort Caroline National Memorial

History and nature in one free visit. Fort Caroline is a National Park Service site on the St. Johns River that marks the location of a 16th-century French colony. There's a replica fort, a museum, and hiking trails through beautiful river habitat. It's one of Jacksonville's most undervisited gems.

Sunsets on the St. Johns

This sounds simple but it's one of the best things Jacksonville does for free. The St. Johns River at sunset, from spots like the Riverside riverfront, the Main Street Bridge, or any number of parks along the water, is genuinely beautiful. The river is wide, the skies here are dramatic, and it costs nothing.
