Ragtime's Gone. Here's Where to Actually Eat in Beaches Town Center Now.

Losing Ragtime stung. No way around it. Forty-one years of Cajun seafood and house beer at the corner of Atlantic and Ocean is a hard thing to replace.

But Beaches Town Center didn't roll up the sidewalks. The neighborhood is still one of the best little restaurant clusters on the First Coast, and if you've been mourning Ragtime by avoiding the area, you're missing out on some legit spots. Here's the lineup worth knowing.

Pete's Bar

You can't talk about the Beaches without Pete's. Cash only. No frills. Pool tables in the back. A piece of Atlantic Beach history that's been there since 1933.

Pete's isn't really a dinner spot in the foodie sense.

 Pete's is a bar bar. But if you want to feel the actual pulse of the neighborhood, this is where you start or end the night. Bring small bills and your patience for the pool table wait. North Beach Fish Camp

Right across from where Ragtime used to be. Fresh seafood, solid wine list, slightly more upscale than your average beach spot but not so fancy that you can't show up in shorts.

The fish camp does a good job of feeling like Old Florida without leaning into the kitsch. Order whatever's local that day and you can't really go wrong. The shrimp and grits is a strong move if you're missing Ragtime's version.

Flying Iguana

Tacos. So many tacos. Plus a tequila list that takes itself a little seriously in the best way.

Flying Iguana sits right in the Town Center mix and is the move for a casual lunch or a long boozy weekend dinner. Big portions, loud vibes, and a patio that fills up fast on nice days. Get there early or be ready to wait.

Mezza Luna

The Beaches Town Center old guard. Italian, family run feel, the kind of place where the menu doesn't really change because it doesn't need to.

Mezza Luna is what you pick when you want a proper sit-down dinner that isn't trying too hard. The wood-fired pizza is reliably great. The wine list is deeper than you'd guess from the outside.

Sliders Seaside Grill

Not technically in the Town Center but close enough to count. Right on the beach, with one of the better outdoor setups in the area.

Sliders is where you take out of town family who want to say they ate "on the beach." The food is solid beach food, the views are the real selling point, and the bar holds up for sunset hangs.

Salt Life Food Shack

Casual, beachy, surf brand attached. Sushi, tacos, burgers, a little bit of everything.

If you can't decide what kind of food you want and your group is split, Salt Life is the diplomatic answer. The rooftop is worth grabbing if there's a wait downstairs.

If the Town Center scene feels too packed and you want something different but still local, The Block Jax is a solid plan B. Food hall, live music, dog park, the whole thing. Different energy than the Beaches but very much in the Jacksonville food scene rotation right now.

Pro tips for the area

A few things that make the Beaches dining experience smoother:

• Park once and walk. Pete's is two blocks from Mezza Luna which is across from Flying Iguana. The whole point of Town Center is the walkability. Use it.
• Weekends fill up fast. Especially in the warmer months, which is basically nine months of the year here. Make reservations where you can.
• Sunday brunch hits different at the beach. Most of these spots do brunch and the morning energy in Town Center is genuinely fun.
• Be patient with newer staff. The Beaches restaurant scene churns staff like every Florida tourist town. The food is usually still great even if service is a beat slower.

The bigger picture

Ragtime's closure changed the corner. There's no pretending otherwise. But the Beaches still has more soul per square foot than most parts of Florida, and the surrounding restaurants are still putting out food worth showing up for.

The steakhouse going into the old Ragtime space, Grafton & Fleck's, will eventually fill that anchor role. Until then, the rest of the neighborhood is doing the heavy lifting just fine.

So make the drive. Grab a parking spot. Walk a couple blocks. The Beaches are still the Beaches, and that's worth a lot.
